Bought this bike in a 13" frame for my son who is 12 - he is 5'0" and about 100 lbs - I wanted something that was good enough so it would last him at least 4-5 years and was rugged enough so he could ride it on or off the road.

This is an update of Specialized's entry level mountain bike. Nice improvements in shifting and components. Overall a great value for the money.

For the price, a mountain bike isn't going to get much better. I've listed the pros and cons, and I stand by them. You get more than what you pay for. If you are an avid cyclist, you can take this mountain bike for miles. I've been taking it for 20-25 mile rides about 4 or 5 times a week and it's been holding it up well. I've had it for about a month and I have between 300 and 400 miles on it already... it feels like it can do this forever, providing you keep up with maintenance (like anything else). I test rode a trek alongside this one, and the trek didn't feel as smooth and refined as the specialized. For under 400 dollars, this is one of the best mountain bikes you can buy. I also ride this thing downhill at 30 miles an hour... it's capable of a lot.

This is an excellent bike for the money and fun to ride. The only Con I had are the Alex rims. I find they go out of true easily, but a few minutes with a spoke wrench and I'm good for a few hundred miles. Although the bike comes with the bottom of the line Altus, I've found it to be very reliable and after 1000+ miles, all shifts are still spot-on. If a smooth ride on the pavement is a concern, try switching tires to something like a Kenda Kross Plus. Overall, this bike is a great value and I've been very satisfied with it. It would be tough to find another bike just as good for the same price... just don't expect it to ride like a $1000 bike.

            Comments:

After not cycling for many years, i recently decided to get back into it. Owning a car was costing more than i was getting out of it, and living in Colorado, i felt a MTB was a good way to go. After spending a couple of months narrowing down my selection (and price range), i decided to go with the '10 Hardrock and i've been very pleased with it! It's far lighter and handles light-years better than my old steel framed mountain bike, shifts and brakes cleanly and has been a joy to ride. I've only had to adjust is the saddle (and I also cut down the handlebars to 24" from the stock 26"), which are personal adjustments that most people make and don't represent anything wrong with the bike. I've been riding it for a few weeks now, and I haven't had any problems with any of the drivetrain or braking components so far, and don't expect to. I don't believe buying a bike straight off the rack is a good idea, and Wheat Ridge Cyclery set this bike up pretty much perfectly (not to mention that they were a real pleasure to purchase from!) The wheels were trued, the derailleurs were properly adjusted and everything just worked right. I use this bike both as my regular commuter and for some trail/XC riding, and it holds its own. Definitely not for the hardcore downhill or freerider, but that's not what this was designed for anyway. The forks work well on curbs and trails alike and the bike handles really well for me. The only real complaint I have is that the saddle is uncomfortable and very stiff, which seems to be par for the course on a lot of bikes. Luckily it's an easy and relatively inexpensive upgrade (I've ridden much more expensive bikes that had uncomfortable saddles as well, and I think it's one of the places that a lot of manufacturers cut corners, not just Specialized.) The shifters and brake levers work great (and the barrel adjusters make tweaking your cable tension easy), and the grips will be sufficient for most people. I plan on upgrading to ergonomic grips, but that's mainly because I've got Carpal Tunnel Syndrom and not really a fault of the bike itself. All in all, I am extremely pleased with the 2010 Hardrock and would definitely recommend it, although I will say that if you're willing to spent a little bit more and maintain your brakes a little more regularly, it might pay to step up to the Disc version. But either way, I don't think you can go wrong!

I have wrecked this bike several times and it just keeps going. I have only had to replace a few spokes. I am ready to move up to a 29" wheel 21 inch frame. You know how it works. I gotta go faster.
